As a Indians fan I have been thrilled by the way Buffalo has been run as a AAA affiliate. The Indians over the last 15 years have really benefited by an amazing farm system thats crown jewel has been the Bisons. Columbus has the county owned Clippers whose old stadium (current stadium for one more season) is less then amazing and the team was long affiliate with the Evil Empire of the Bronx. With those ties severed and the current deal Washington timed to expire at the same time as the Indians deal with Buffalo is due up at the same time. It would be great for Columbus to bring in its future home in the Arena district with a switch to being the farm team for the Tribe who already has a statewide TV channel that could help push the AAA and help build the central Ohio fan base for the Tribe. While I feel bad about turning our backs on Buffalo, living in Columbus I would be thrilled to have the Indians AAA in my own back yard and got excited earlier when the possibility was hinted at. Well apparently the rumors are getting more traction and it seems somethink that Columbus will in 2009 link up with the Tribe. We will see what happens. See Ohio.com
The AAA affiliate in Columbus would be pretty sweet. This has been a story ever since people noticed the contracts running out at the same time – the Indians org has also done nothing to dispell rumors about this possibly happening, which lends credence to the possibility.
