Last year, for a fleeting second, I thought Bono was just about to appear on American Idol when the final few contestants got to sing a duet with a famous singer. One of the contestants picked U2′s “One,” but it was Mary J Blige who appeared on stage. I thought that hell would have to freeze over before Bono appeared on American Idol.
Well, I was wrong. This year, Bono’s apparently agreed to appear on Idol as a part of its “Idol Gives Back” show to aid the poor in Africa and America. It’s still not clear to me whether this means that Bono will perform live on the show. For sure, the following will be performing: “Gwen Stefani, Josh Groban, Pink, Michael Bublé, Annie Lennox, Il Divo and popular Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen).” Bono’s performance would give American Idol tremendous “street cred” in the music industry. I can’t wait to see what happens.
