The AP has somehow come across the secure video conference that occured six days before Katrina struck the gulf coast, and apparently it doesn’t look good for the current administration, with the president being explicitly warned by his experts about the strength of the impending hurricane and the likely failure of the levees (which he famously said no one anticipated collapsing). Its not clear this early on what kind of damage if any this video will cause as it appears to me some people just don’t seem to care how our gov’t is operating.
In my view this video coming out is both scary and reassuring. Reasuring, being only in the sense that yes our government actually did look at the situation ahead of time, but scary that even being a nation that can afford to topple foreign regimes and play world policeman, we can’t take care of our own people.
I just heard about this on my drive home tonight on the BBC, and briefly reading on the NY Times site (see here).
